milky oil. head gasket?
Truck isn't running rough but I changed the oil and found that it's milky. Research tells me it's a head gasket but I hear EGR cooler too. how hard is it to get down to the head gasket and is it worth my time? I might just sell the stupid thing and buy something different.

I like easy jobs. I've only heard they're hard. I'd like to get $5500 for it but I'd take $5000 and take the headache rack and toolbox off. I'd sell the stacks with it. I can text you pictures if you're really interested. I live in northern Ohio near Toledo

You're only 2.5 hours from me. If you say it's easy but don't want to buy it, I'll take some time off work and come pay you to fix it and teach me.

No oil in coolant. only milky oil. The dipstick has the sludge at the top end but clean in the middle.

On the 49 state 12v, Non California, there is no egr, or egr cooler, if not the head gasket leaking it could possibly be the oil cooler, plate located behind oil filter, or some crack in the head or block. Head gasket is something very easy to replace all you need is basic tools and a haynes manual.

What concerns me is that it looks like grease is coming out of the blow off tube. I'll check the oil cooler when i dig back there tomorrow.

I read the other post by brother hogg. https://www.dieselbombers.com/12-val...ad-gasket.html
He had oil in his coolant but I have the opposite. Milky coolant on my dipstick. I put a bottle of head gasket fix in it to try it that way and I'm in the process of dropping the oil pan. I'll check the oil cooler while I'm down there but that's the update

the easy way to tell if it is a head gasket is pressurize the cooling system while you have the oil pan down and see if any coolant drips down from the head gasket height. the oil cooler will have to be pulled to confirm its condition and youll need a test plate or take it to your local cummins dealer or performance shop and they should be able to test it for you. let me know what you find out.

not good to put that stuff in your cooling system, i just replaced my head gasket last weekend, due to my external waste gate stuck shut and 65 pounds of boost blew it out !! took me bout 6 housr start to finsh with the help of my engine hoist, just pull the head with the manifold and turbo attached,
