cummins motor oil
Due to smog regs they take out all the good stuff from diesel these days. You need somthing to lube your pump.
I use the Walmart Super Tech 2 cycle oil for boat motors. Buy it in the gallon jug and use two of the 16oz jugs in each fill-up.

Just gives the fuel a little bit of lube quality. Helps out your pump and the rest of the motor. You won't notice any more smoke from it.
I put a little too much (like 4-5oz per gal) in my 06 Superduty one time and I think it lost a little power, but that is a whole different animal. I don't think you could put too much 2stroke oil in a gen 2 cummins.
Just cheap insurance with today's Ultra low sulfur fuel in an old truck.

Chevron delo 400
Shell rotella all in 15w40 are good oils.
If you want extended drain intervals, (while still doing a filter at 3k) delvac-1 or rotella t-6 full synthetic 5w40 are permissible, as well.
I use Valvoline Premium Blue and 2 quarts Lucas oil. I've seen first hand the things that Lucas oil can do for an engine and I was impressed.
I use the Super Tech 2-cycle oil also, roughly 1oz per gallon. It actually quieted my pump down some and it idles smoother. It deffenetly won't hurt anything and like dezzrats said it's cheap insurance.
