power brakes not working!!!!!
i got a 1996 dodge 2500 cummins, 4x4, i was driving the other day and i went to stop and my brakes worked fine, i went to stop at the next light and about hit this car in front of me, my pedal was harder than i have ever felt it, i had both feel standing on the pedal. what is the problem?

Not sure how dodge works but my ford lost the air pump and the exact same thing happened to me but I was commin down a freeway off ramp at 75mph.

brakes not working
I took the vacuum pump and p steering pump off and found that the two ears on the v pump that go into the adapter had broken off I got prices from 300 to 1500 for a new v pump I found one at OREGON INJECTOR SERVICE in Eugene oregon 330 with exchange this is a remaned part but just bolts on it took about 3 hours to put it back together , you have to put it on the power steering pump then install it all as one piece.

ok great thanks ill remember that, buti have worse problems, im needing to pull my motor. ive got oil and water mixing, ive put 3 head gaskets on it,i put arp head studs on it, and 2 new oil coolers and gaskets to try and narrow it down but im having no luck. so its turned into a long a$$ project. bummer..

Don't pull the engine yet!!
I am having the identical problem and just changed the head gasket (for the 3rd time in the life of the truck) and the oil cooler and gaskets. I'm just learning that the "no vacuum" problem, and the frothy white oil (and blow-by) are most likely connected! Here's a post I found on a different forum.
"On these engines, the vacuum pump vents into the crankcase. So, if you get a vacuum leak anywhere in the system it pumps a bunch of air into the crankcase which ends up exiting through the breather tube. If your HVAC is stuck on defrost it tells me this is probably your problem. You need to check the whole system for vacuum leaks.
Vacuum runs your HVAC directional controls, 4WD front axle disconnect, and cruise control (if equipped). Firstly you need to check your vacuum pump output. Remove the main vacuum feed hose from the pump and measure your vacuum at the pump at idle with a vacuum gauge. It should be 18 inches of vacuum or more. Remember that number. Now, reconnect the vacuum system, then TEE into it somewhere (at the pump, or up at the firewall) with the gauge. Read vacuum at idle. If the value is now much less with the whole vacuum system connected, you have a leak. You can disconnect and plug off each branch of the circuit, one-by-one to isolate your leak."
