Default Gear Ratio Questions

I am looking for the best gears for drag racing. I currently have 3.55's, and by going on the DB calculators to figure speeds with the overdrive accounted for it is a 2.65 actual gear ratio, i was wondering what either 4.10's or 4.56's would do. right know at 3900 RPM i can do 143MPH, i would like to lower that becuase i cant even get in to O/D but for 1-2 seconds in the quarter. I want this truck to get up and boogie but not go over 120, not to many long roads around here. hope someone can help me.

you dont want to use overdrive......you lose power when it shifts to overdrive.........AND DONT STREET RACE!!!!....goofing off stop light to stop light is one thing, but squaring off side by side on a 2 lane is dangerous.....oh and with the weight of your truck its going to be highly unlikely that your going to break 110 mph with the horsepower your making.....

well for one thing, i am not that stupid to street race, i am young but not that dumb. Also i know that there is alot more in the engine and that the trans is not up to par for the power, which is why power is so low. as u can see in my sig, i have a good amount of fuel, a 0 plate full forward, no afc arm, 370 injectors, 4K GSK, snow water/meth and a phat shaft 62. i just need a trans. even with a good trans i thought for legal quarter mile drag racing that a 4:10 gear ratio would be better than 3.55's. i dont care about the top speed of the truck, as long as it dont reach it in the quarter. i was just wondering if u guys thought it would lower my top speed too much changing the gears.

Also what is interesting, my truck preforms best in O/D. it wont get out of its own way in 1-3, but once she hits o/d it really sits u back in the seat and u can really watch the needle move. i understand i aint got no 11 second truck here, but i thought it should do better than a 15.70 at 83 mph, with water/meth. I did on one run get to 90mph but did a 15.73. that was before the 4k also.

hope this info will help u understand where im coming from.

thanks

Your In TC Lock up in OD 1 to 1 ratio ..

OD is either going to make your truck fall on its face or make it SLING SHOT .... i perfer the later

Im not a gear man so i dont have an answer for you

the 4.10's will defiantely help since your running the 4K kit.....you can run the RPM's that you need, manually shift the truck too and keep the RPM's where its making power.....

Remember, your mkaing a lot of torque, you really don't need a real low gear ratio. Maybe 3.73's would be better for drivability perposes.

Keep the gears you have if you'r on tires of 33" or less.

35" or greater then look at 3.73

If you get a solid tranny then you will apreciate the long hard pull that your truck will make with the higher gears.

leave the truck how it is and upgrade the valve body and converter in the trans. you'll be amazed at the differance once you get all your power down in all your gears. good luck.

here's a calculator for you...scroll down to find the one you want. This is the simple way to figure out your variables, including tire size. This doesn't take into account 1320 feet of distance traveled, and if your truck has the power to peak at the trap, but it'll at least you'll have the theoretics nailed down.

My honest opinion is to defeat OD, leave the 3.55's if you're running with street size tires, and get the TC efficiency up with trans/TC upgrades to utilize the proper power curve of the engine. If you wanna finish off the trans, try a run with a mystery switch and OD defeated and watch what your ET does.
