how do you prevent the timing from slipping? what cuases it?

Well what causes it......is the gear slips on the shaft. What can ya do to prevent it? Well when adjusting the timing you have to make sure the shaft is COMPLETELY dry before reinstalling and torquing the nut. Other than that not much.

How much does it typically run ya to get the timing done?

$250 give or take, that included a softer AFC spring, adjusting the valves, and new valve cover gaskets.

thats would describe my truck pretty well. except when its in gear it won't even go out to 2500 sometimes. but blue smoke on the top end and poppin when i rev it in nuetral and sputtering when i try to go past 2300 i can't wait to have it timed and do a 3kgsk

well my first gen would pop and smoke blue...one rebuilt pump later (and guessing retimed) and she revs out like a champ.
