1939 Dodge 1.5 Ton Flatbed Build thread
#282
I joined this form for this trend. I have always wanted a vintage fire truck, untill recently I decided to do a street rod fire truck, everyone restores them to original (boring) . I want to take a 1939/40 dodge or Plymouth regular sized truck, extend the box prob like 3 feet, and heighten it like 1 foot just enough to fit the leaders and stuff on the side but small enough so it dosent have that tall bulky look of the old fire trucks. I also plan on chopping the roof a little to give it a slick look. Then for the big part I want to putt a cummins in it. I plan on using a 98 I have for the engine and using the frame as well.i would love to see this trend continue, and more pics. I'm very interested in seeing the fire wall and floor as you finalize them so I can get my creative juices flowing.
I am still trying to figure out a way to steer the beast, I had to overhaul a few of my other trucks these past months... been busy but nothing on this truck.
Thanks for the follow and the replies

Sounds like a good plan and thank you!
I am just worried about having anything under the truck that could break when running over dirt roads rocks and using the truck. Though this will be a show truck I plan on using it as well. Nothing would be worse than running down a dirt road and puncturing the intercooler then having dust and dirt sucked into the intake.

Let me know how what you think of that idea, if you don't like it ill help you come up with something else.
As for the cooler, how much room do you have in front of or behind the radiator, you may be able to find a smaller one to sleek in there.

The issue is that I may have 40,000lbs behind the rear axle meaning the mustang rack is not near enough power plus I am using semi truck tires... I tried a rack off a Freightliner but it is far too wide. I have looked at building a custom rack and pinion nad can not see a way to make it work.
The only option I see is a electric power assisted steering system most likely with a axle mounted rack and pinion. Again I need to find something stout and powerful, like off a semi truck or large box truck.
The other complication with the steering is that I have large air bags and a parallel 4-link up front meaning I need a cross steer or rack and pinion style system.
I am not as worried about the cooler because I am planning a system with Laminova cores mounted between the turbo and the intake then a radiator cooler in the nose. I at least see an option there that is feasible and reasonable.

Armor it like a grill and expanded wire tread for screen. you can get stainless sheet that is perforated. or some kind of duct with an electric blower for flow. having it out away from the engine bay will help it cool too. Even the long run to the intake will lower intake temp and improve boost.

I agree full hydro would be great but not legal for road use and it would suck to not have a mechanical means to steer if it goes out at 70mph.
I will look into the orbital hydro assist I have not seen that before. I am leaning towards an electric assist rack and pinion, mounting the system to the axle. The issue is that nothing that is currently made will work so I need to find someone who can fabricate it.
Thanks for following!!
