Default Timing case repair (dowel pin)

unfortunately my dowel pin came loose, cracked my case so im going to replace the case and cover, just curious how important a dowel pin is and if i need to put one back in? im not exactly sure what their purpose is. and while doing this repair is there anything i need to be cautious about or take note of?
thanks

sorry to hear about ur luck man. i went thru the same ordeal this past winter. u do need to put the pin back in. if u dont, ur gears housing can shift n slip ur timing. you also need to tab the pin so it cant come out again. also, the 4 bolts that hold the case to the block have been known to come out n do basically the same thing. red loctite will stop them from coming out. also, when u lift your tappets off the cam n pull the cam out, put a piece of pvc pipe in place of the cam so if one of the tappets would fall, it doesnt go all the way to the oil pan. take your time, the whole procedure isn't really that bad, good luck

well mine fell out while i had it down at college so i could only work on it after school. so i think it took me like a week n a half of workin on it a little bit every night. if u had all the parts n set ur mind to it, it should only take a day or 2
