Tranny problem
I have a 96 dodge with a 5.9 and 47re tranny . when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd it goes into 3rd then kicks back in to 2nd it seem that it doesnt know what gear it should be in . Any one got an idea to fix this?

I'm not sure that the torque converter would be the problem. It doesn't care which gear you are in -- it just transmits engine power to the front pump by liquid or lock-up clutch means.
I would be inclined to look at the valve body, band, or linkage adjustments instead.
Have you regularly changed fluid and filter? There is a shuttle valve in the 2-3 position that might either be locked in its bore from dirty oil or have a broken spring, requiring valve body repairs. The good news is that valve body repairs do not necessitate removing the transmission from the truck.
The 2nd gear band may also be the culprit. Bands are to be adjusted ever 24,000 miles, but this seldom happens. Geno's Garage says this:

The front band controls the 2nd gear cluster. The rear band controls the 3rd gear cluster and reverse. For a 2-3 shift, the transmission shifts back to 1st gear with the front band while the rear band engages 3rd gear. If the front band does not release the 2nd gear clutches before the third gear clutches engage, the transmission binds, which shortens the life of the transmission clutches. If the front band releases too early in the shift, the engine will overspeed (sounds and feels like a slip) during the 2-3 shift.

Mine is actualy an H series but I have had many cust. with same cond. at 40 to 55 try loosening cable abit release catch and push cable housing towards throttle belcrank connection. throttling pressure overrides gov. press. and this will increase pedal travel required for downshift will also affect upshift points hope this helps
My 97 4x4 auto makes a whirring, rubbing sort of noise when towing my boat up some pretty steep hills. Truck has overdrive off. It makes the noise when it transitions from 2nd to 3rd. I'm trying to sell my Aprilia Falco so I can get a new tranny. hrrrrmph!
