yeah the cam has to come out, along with the gear for the injection pump, push rods, rockers... lots of fun stuff. its a lot of parts but its not that hard of a job if ur slightly mechanically inclined

You can use RTV. Get the Permatex stuff (Grey) or the Permatex gasket maker called "the right stuff". That or you can get the timing cover gasket from Cummins. Dont forget a new crank seal.

It's under $75 for the cover gasket and crank seal from Cummins. Take your CPL number to them and they can find the right P/N's.

The cam has to come out to just change the cover. This is a question since I've never worked on a 12V.

Yes that is correct......the gear is pressed on and the only way to get it out of the way is to pull the cam.

Isn't the gear on the back side of the cover. You pull the balancer and the belt, then all the screws that hold the cover on and when the cover is removed all the gears are there in the gear case. But were not talkin about pullin the gear case here, just the front cover off of it.

Here again, I'm not tryin to tell anybody the are wrong here, I'm learnin. The 12V and my 24V are the same covers though so the assembly should be for the most part the same.

Only have to pull the cam if the whole timing case has to come off. By the title of this thread I'm gonna guess he needs the whole case since the cover dosent crack. I have a thread on removing the case I'll have to dig it up.
