I have a 96 12 valve and im not sure whats going on but i have to hit the throttle when turning over to make it fire up, i have had people tell me that it is probably a cracked fuel return line but was not to sure. any advice?

Well the first thing to do is to make sure that your idle is set correctly.

What rpm does it idle at when in gear?

Have a look at this: Ram Diesel Problems

It could also be getting some wear on the injector pump - how many miles?

Its not real uncommon for 12V guys to have to give it a little pedal to get it to start. I would suspect that you need to bump your cold idle just a touch.

Welcome BTW.

I never had to touch the gas pedal on mine, but I live in S.Texas.

If it was a cracked return line it would be dripping diesel when the engine's running. And you'd constantly smell that raw diesel whenever exiting the truck, like if near a gas station.

sounds to me like a tweaked stock gov spring set that is set too tight, and the idle was jacked up to compensate for it. Classic symptom of a mis-adjusted governor spring.

Mine did the same thing. I replaced both rubber fuel lines. The one behind the fuel filter had a small crack.
