Default Electrical Problems

Ive got a 1998 12 valve and it loses power to all my electronics. my cruise control quit working, my air conditioning quit, my tachometer quit, and it shows the alternator only charging on the gauge half the time. plus all of my lights wont quit flashing on my instument cluster. and when my lights on the cluster start flashing i lose my headlights and my lights in the instrument cluster. i originally thought it was my alternator but now ive put 3 different ones on in the past month. one shop has told me that it was the computer but my dad told me he thinks it is the crank shaft position sensor. what do yall think?? im in desperate need of help. im tired of throwing money into this truck and when i get it back from the shop its way worse than when i took it to them. thanks colt

im having the same probs right now. my crankshaft pos sensor (tach sensor) is coming in the mail this week and if it doesnt work then im going to throw in a comp. mine is a 94 so it doesnt have the diognostic port like urs. you should try and see if a code is thrown out and maybe that can tell you otherwise maybe its the sensor or comp. sensor new is bout 100 bucks comp new is prob close to 400.

your tach sensor is on the front of the engine on the front cover pointed at the dampner its held on by 2 bolts

the tach sensor was my problem! i put in the new one tonight and EVERYTHING works. speedo, tach, ac, alt, haven't checked cruse but im pretty sure it will work. i think my sensor was going out before i ripped it out when i was pulling the head cause when i would put it on cruse it would randomly shut off going down the freeway and also my tach jumped around a bit too.

hope u get urs fixed too cause it was a HUGE pain for me when nothing worked.

sensor is located right above harmonic balancer its held on by 2 nuts that take a 13mm wrench and the plug is right by the top rad hose hope all this helps u.

ya hopefully not. i think a pcm from a 96 or 97 will work on your truck but im not sure. i know for my 94 only a 94 will work because something changed in 95 and in 96 they went to obd2 so that one is totally different.
