With the front cover off you can see that the gear does not move much because of the tapper. I thought it would at least move back some once you torque it down. Anyhow It is very difficult to get it where you want and set the timing. As soon as you go to torque it it advances about 1 to 1.5 degree. This is ok so I have to decrease it defore I start torquing it down.
I hope I never have to change this again. I want 16 to 16.5. We will see what happens.

As far as setting it 1-1.5 deg ahead before you torque it down, this is what I had to do when I did mine. I torqued the nut, and then rechecked timing right away to make sure it was what I wanted.
I'm not an expert here, but I don't think this is right. First off, the stock pump/gear does not have a key. Second, I've successfully set my timing, and watched my buddy set his without heating the gear at all, that's just a bad idea. If you heat that gear up, you run a risk of distorting it, especially if you don't know what you're doing.
