i dont see why it wouldnt work, but heck, if your going to go through the trouble of pulling all that chit apart you may as well just use the tab...

There is a group of guys that were using a jig to drill a hole in the right spot and puttin a bolt in place to hold the pin in but almost nobody goes that route anymore for a few reasons.

1. If you are not the original owner you may be drilling through an already tabbed cover.

2. If you truck is a 98 or newer you may be drilling through an already updated cover.

3. Under that front cover is a number of other small bolts that by pulling the cover you can also check to be sure they are still in place and tight. If that dowel works lose in a lot of case those bolts have also come lose and can cause the same destruction.

4. If your truck is old enough to need this done then it is also in need of a new seal in there anyway and the cover has to come off to replace it.

the truck i have just got is1994 4x4 auto 95000 miles not any leaks no were .engine runs extra good. was thinking of pulling cover to see pin. if everything is still in place why not ***** punch around hole making more pressure for dowel to work through.stick cover back on with new crank seal of course and be done no worries be happy not going to drill anything just ***** punch like when a bearing dosnt fit as tight as you want ***** punch around it then its tight

The tab would be easier then doing that. For the tab you just pull a bolt that is sittin right there already put the tab in place and replace the bolt with a longer one that comes in the tab kit. No drillin or tappin it's just pull a bolt and put it back and your done.

It is easy to tell if you have the updated cover. if your data plate on the cover is attatched with rivets you have an old cover, if its screwed on, you have the updated cover.
