Be on the right side of the engine block (facing the front). Be square and have to big electrical connections.

The ECM (Engine Control Module) uses various sensor inputs for emissions control.

On the engine! Sorry I had to.

There should be a metal tag on the timing case with it on there. Pretty much right in front of the injection pump.

serial number location

If you have a 12v with an ECM you had better get your brain or the engine checked out!

Its all mechanical, the closest thing to an ECM in the truck is the PCM which controlls next to nothing to do with the engine (grid heaters basically)

On the gear train cover on the drivers side (directly infront of the inj pump) you will find a metal tag on there with the ESN, along with various other engine specs (timing/valve lash/smog)

so what would you do if some hack (aka, the previous owner) replaced the engine (cause he blew it up with hacked up engine mods) and lost the tag for the new engine? (which might actually be a '93 >_>)

I'm having the same problem--finding the serial number plate for my engine. It's a 2005 Cummins 24V HO: not on valve cover, not near exhaust, not near oil pump, not near timing cover (I've been told to look at all those places). I have the VIN, but neither Dodge, nor Cummins can give me any info on the engine's SN. Any suggestions?
