47RE= 4 (gears) 7 (capacity) R (rear drive) E (electronic control) But the 47RH and 47RE are pretty much the same thing.
47RH is hydraulicly shifted until you need lock-up or OD 47RE uses the pcm, tps, speed sensors and other crap to trigger them. But it boils down to is they both need electronics to work just the RE needs the inputs to shift at all. Clear as mud?

there are 7 little gnomes, 6 of which have 8" long (head height for most humans) miniature spud bars and when it is time to shift the head gnome in the torque converter shouts through a pipe to the first gnome and tells the first gnome to open a valve to let hydraulic pressure apply the low/reverse clutch pack to engage it, then when it is time to shift to second gear he hollers for gnome2 and 3 to man their spud bars, gnome2 has to tighten the intermediate band and gnome 3 opens a valve to let hydraulic pressure apply the 2-3 clutchpack...................
LOL
yes it is controlled by the TCM and the APPS/TPS
