its basically a pipe that takes some air and directs it in to a material that muffles it. http://media.musclecarblog.com/ai/2007/219.jpg they are a really cheap set up that you can just put in place of the stock muffler.

I had something like that in my bike...
lets the exhaust right through but makes the sound less strong (in my ears it sounded a little bit higher then, took the woof out..)
