Default difrence in 12 and 24 valve trannys

What is the difference in the trannys in the 97 dodge 5 spd, and the 98 and up 5 psd? I've seen a newer modle truck it was a 24 valve of some year not sure.. but It had a plastic shroud around the shifter.. I know i'll have to change the 4x4 shifter, that leads to another question, will a 98 and up shifter assembely bolt up to a 97 tranny The reason i'm askin is i'd like to put this plastic shroud on my truck..

98.5 - 02

94-early 98

Besides the top plate being different, the 4x4 tailshaft housing didn't have the holes drilled and tapped for the t-case shifter on th 2001 trans I bought.

Ok will the top plate of a 98.5-02 5 spd trans bolt right on a 94-97 nv4500? I realize it would be pointless to do this to a good plate.. but my top plate is cracked, I'm loosing a little fluid I'm gonna have to do something about it eventually.. so whan I get another one I'll get the later modle one if it'll bolt on..
