You caught me on that one - I just assumed all NV-4500HD's were the same.

They are

Its the linakge thats different. If you wanted to run that you would have to get the linkage and shiter parts from a 98 - 02 5 speed.

The tranny is the same internally... The linkage is different, but even linkage from the 98+ won't work, it has a different top plate for the case. The 98+ have a bolt on style shifter, while the 94-97 had a gay way of doing it, I know... I have one. You cannot put a short shifter into a 94-98 tranny without changing top plates to a 98+, but the 98+ tranny's have a way shorter throw already, so it seems lame to put in a shift kit into a tranny that shifts short already.

You are very much correct.
The only other difference is how the t-case shifter mounts. I just put an 01 nv4500 in my 97. I guess the 01 t-case shifter mounts to the floor? On the 97 it bolted to the tailshaft housing. The places for the bolts where there on the 01 nv4500, so we drilled and tapped them. You can definitly tell a big difference in the shift throw.
