timing

Sorry, I was away working yesterday.
To make sure we are clear here - we are talking about the timing of the injector pump (not the timing of the engine). You will need some special tools - mainly a delivery valve socket, a metric dial indicator and a means to hold the indicator. Snapon sells a kit SP500:

SPX Miller also sells a kit, but I do not know the p/n off the top of my head. As well, a few of our sponsors might be able to set you up as well.
Also, a Barring tool is handy for turning the engine over but you can also use a socket on the alternator pulley and turn the engine backwards (3/4" or 7/8").
To check the timing - you need to pull the number one delivery valve - u need the special socket and a small magnet to pull out the delivery valve. You install the indicator and then bar the engine over watching the lift of the plunger (will be in mm). You compare that to a chart to find out how many degrees youre timing is at.:

I have never done this myself but to actually adjust the timing I believe you have to use a puller to remove the timing gear from the pump shaft. Then rotate the gear to advance/retard the timing. When you get the gear to where to want it, install the gear back on the pump shaft and tighten the nut back up. Verify the correct lift by barring the engine over again and comparing the lift to the chart. Do not forget to reinstall the delivery valve.
Sorry, I do not have pics or a how-to on this.
BTW, this is not a "Diesels In Distress" item. Please take a minute to find the correct forum and make youre posts in there (94-98 12V). This forum is for Emergencies.

Yeah it does too....I did not realize you can buy the individual pieces from the kit as well.
I just mentioned the other puller to give an option to the snap on kit. One like this would work as well:
