dont they make a tool that you can check injectorline pressure like rail pressure on a common rail?

yup i made my own useing some stainless fittings, small check valve assembly off an ariel compressor lube system, needle valve, old injector line and an injector, and i slid the injector in to a 1/2 inch pice of stainless to contain the spray, (cant tell i am a gas compressor tech) had most of the junk on my truck

I had the injector pump off, but I made sure it was in time with the engine. The truck run when we got done. It was not until I started to drive it that it started blewing out white smoke, and it would hardly pull itself. When we try to crank it you have to floor the pedal, and it will crank and rev up and it will die. The book says if it smokes excessive white smoke it is the lift pump. The truck has over 240,000.

Yes, that is what I was thinking. White smoke is generally incomplete combustion and a number of things can cause it.

red's ram - do you know how to check fuel pressure? It could be the grid heater as well.

i checked the timing 2 times and each time it was right. I don't know how to check fuel pressure. What is the grid heater.

Sounds like the timing slipped.

Something else to remember is NEVER use starting fluid unless the grid heaters are either removed or unhooked.

yep starting fluid bad no matter what a guy up heres 1st gen cummins is addicted to that stuff wont start without it even at 80* outside

Starting fluid isnt just bad it can be dangerous. A no-no unless your grid heater is disconnected.

red's ram - the grid heater is a plate thats sandwiched between the intake horn and the engine. (look below the intake - you will see a couple of wires. Its similar in function to a glow plug but it heats the air before if enters the engine. It only runs when the truck is cold and isnt moving.

Yeah, i dont think its slipped - he had the injector pump off the truck. I agree that is very likely where the problem is.


Where do you have the timing set at and how much lift do you have ?
