mine does the smae thing. I just hold it at a 1000 for X amount of time to let the motor warm up to where it runs

that happen on my budys 95 cummins auto when he took his stacks off i just turned up the idal and it hasnt happened yet

If thats what you are doing, I can almost guarantee that the idle needs adjusting.

I would say its an idle issue however my 97 was doing this as well and a new overflow valve fixed it.
