I have a 96 2500 Single cab, automatic transmission. A few weeks ago I went to put it in reverse and it wouldn't go into gear at all. All forwards gears worked just fine, but reverse is nowhere to be found. It happened after hitting a few large potholes down a bumpy road, but I'm not sure if they're connected. I dropped the tranny and am getting ready to open it up and take a look to see if I can find the problem before I take it to a shop. Any ideas on what it could be, or what to look for?? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

 

If all your forward gears are working, you probably have a rear band issue. It's also possible that you have lost your OD direct clutch in the overdrive.

You'll have to tear it down and find out...

was it banging into reverse before it finally quit?

 

Sometimes and sometimes it would only go in if I flipped OD off
