Default Timing and cam gear

I have a 12v in my excavator and pulled it out to re seal all the gaskets! When I pulled it apart it had the notch for the key in the IP shaft but no key and no notch in the cam get and im pretty sure that i have it timed wrong. I haven't tried to start it yet but its back in the machine. Can any one help. This is my first time in one of these engines and I could use some help Thanks

Its timed by injection pump lift, its not keyed to the shaft. You could time it by finding TDC, making a mark for reference, then remove the pump pin holder, turn the engine until you see the pump timing pin notch inside the pump, pin the pump, pop the gear off and turn the engine back to tdc then then reinstall the pump gear.

Ok maybe I am ok, what I did- Lined up crank and cam gear by alining the one O in the middle of the OO on those gears. Installed the IP then found the timing mark in the pump and inserted the timing pin on back of timing cover into cam gear. Installed IP gear in this location. Does this sound right? also there was no pin to remove and flip over in the IP so i centered it best i could and had a buddy hold it with a screw driver while I put the gear on. not sure if there was suppose to be one in the but I was told there was!?!? Next weird thing, after all this and the new cam the push rod and rocker arms where WAY out of adjustment, Like an 1/8th in of play. but I adjusted them up like normal and engine rolled over good and all seamed fine. Thanks for replying.

sounds good would have been right on if you had a timing pin in the pump, as long as the pump did not turn when you were tightening the nut it will be just fine
