If they are the same trannies then your should be ok with the transfer case.

Are you going to use the same PCM? and to do it is simple to pull the T Case just takes some grunting and cussing and making sure you dont hurt your self. A good engine hoiste would be nice. I would take the entire front end off such as the front clip, hood, and radiator, tranny cooler, and intercooler off so you can slide the engine in rather than play the squezzing it in game.

No the pcm is not the same for the 97 since the 99 is talking to a 99 Cummins ECM and is only programmed for that communications with those moduels on your truck, Im not sure if the yoke size on the tranny of a 97 is smaller than the one on the 99 that would be easy to check on you own. As for electrical thats the fun part not completly sure what you would have to do, never done a swap always just a replace.
