Cummins Newb, tranny question
so i've got a 1996 7.3 powerstroke but goin to look at a 98 2500 cummins for a second truck this weekend. if it shifts clean im takin her home. not sure what tranny is in it, n i dont know much about dodge or cummins so could someone tell me what the best tranny is in these trucks and average miles before a rebuild? this ones got 205 on the clock but im not worried about the engine. any help would be much appreciated.

If its an auto I believe its a 46RE, on average for MOST drivers the tranny needs rebuilt around 180K, generally the biggest issues are TC, but the best transmissions are standards in the dodge the NV4500 which is a five speed. The only issues with them are that sometimes the fith gear nut backs out and you losse fifth gear but they seem to last forever with the occasional clutch replacement. Since its a 98 I dont know if its a 12V or 24V since thats the year they switched to 24V. My 98.5 has 246K on the original tranny, they will last but you need to adjust bands and change fluid every 70K
