Default Check engine light on

I just recently purchased my 98 12 valve and the check engine light is on. I was told by the previous owner that it was something that was removed from the intake air horn and yes there is an oblong plate about halfway down the horn. I also was told it was the EGR valve. Can someone tell me if I do need the valve and if not can i somehow shut the check engine light off? Thanks

No you don't need the EGR unless you have to get inspected in Cali. maybe. Not sure on the CEL possibly an ECM from a non Cali. truck.
