Default 97 Cummins Turbo Diesel

So, a couple of you remarked on my last post in regard to my fuel pump issue that my truck had no electric fuel pump in the fuel tank. Well, there is the tank, and there is the electronic fuel pump that it showed in both the Chilton Book, and the Haynes Book. It is there just as both books said it would be. So my next question is, the electrical harness is being a pain in the *** to get disconnected. Anyone know how hard it would be to just cut and replace the wire harness? I don't want to scrap it until I know I am not going to have a bigger project on my hands re-wireing a bunch of stuff....Anybody have experience with this??? Thanks guys, GaryB

First it's a Cummins, second is that a pump or just a sending unit, my sending unit looked similar to that As far as the wire it will come apart they just get stuck from being together for years, you could cut the wires and then put them back together with solder and heat shrink tube, but I wouldn't do that.

Not sure what you're lookin at in your Haynes manual but mine shows a MECHANICAL lift pump on 94 to 98 models. It's mounted on the engine block above the starter.

First it's a Cummins
Fixed the title. Interesting how us Cummins guys notice, and comment on that instantly.

It does look like a sending unit to me as well. Unless there is a pump in there as well. How many wire run to the fuel basket? If I remember correctly, a sender only has 3 wire, but a sender/pump combo will have 5.

The wires are only there for the float, for the guage on the dash, so if your having a problem with fuel delivery, put a guage on it and see the psi rating- then check lift pump on side of motor, all the lines maybe your getting air in system... thats what i would doo.. hope that helps...
