Blown Turbo
#12
just replaced the turbo. I broke the shaft in 2 and the intake side jumped all around in there and melted the tips of the blades. It killed the bearings in there and the oil pumped into my exhaust. Real nice smoke screen it creates. Don't try this at home. Now it is all better and running great again.

Thats weird that you only hit 29 psi.. I hit 30 and 31 psi alot with my VVTurbo on my LBZ.. and WAY over 1275 degrees.
As far as a turbo timer, why spend the extra cash? Just be your own timer.. I always let my truck sit for a few minutes to make sure the temps are down below 400 for a few minutes before I shut mine down. After making long hauls with the camper I will often let it idle for 15-30 mins as well. Also, shut off the A/C when you are letting it cool off, mine seems to cool down MUCH faster with the a/c turned off. Sometimes I even pop the hood to help things cool off.
Glad to hear your back up and running.

I'm suspecting that for some reason the ECM saw something and closed the vanes too tight or they they got stuck.
As far as turbo cool down time, on these new trucks the turbo is water cooled. No need to let it sit running for a long period of time. I can make a 5 hour road trip pulling a load and when I pull off the road the turbo will cool down to 380* in just over a minute. My turbo timer is set 1 minute and my EGT's are always down to normal in that time frame. I'm straight piped with 4" into 5" stack so that helps but even with the stock exhaust you shouldnt have to run it any longer than about a minute to drop the temps down to a safe level.
