I will drop the tank tomorrow and clean both of them out. I also bought new filters and will replace those. I will also check for current at the fuel injection pump. Thanks for the tips. I went and bought a book today on repairing and working on a 6.9 liter too. I am new to these and wnat to learn more about them. Thanks again - Todd

About the same thing happened to me with my dads 6.2. I got it to where it would squirt fuel out the injector lines, then pop with some either, but wouldn't start. I bled the lines about a dozen times till I though about checking the return line and master fuel solenoids for power. Turns out the return line wasn't getting power so I made a jumper. Cranked it over again, and it fired right up. Injector pump must load up from excess fuel and basically shut itself down or something, IDK.

I have a 85 6.9 and have never seen a hand pump. Where exactly is it??

I would plug the truck in for a hour or two unhook the glow plugs and give it a shot of either. I say this because you were abel to crank the engine and bleed the fuel lines
Make sure each glow plug is actually getting power.

I don't know where the hand pump in this truck is. I haven't seen one, but I could have overlooked it somewhere. Anyone know?

Right next to or on top of the fuel filter in the engine bay. There should be a small petcock for draining water off the fuel, and a little round **** that screws down. Un screw it and it should be the small short stroke hand pump.

I'll see if I can find a picture for ya.

I looked all around the filters and there is not a handpump. I found a valvestem type valve on the side of one of the fuel filter housings though.

On my 6.9 their is only a valvestem bleeder. My water seperator is right next to the firewall on the drivers side.
Thier must have been a change in their fuel/water system somewhere along the line. Build date on mine was November 84

I HAVE A 6.9 AND IT WAS IN THE FLOOR OF MY GARAGE FOR 5 YEARS , WHEN A PUT IT TO MY CJ ,I TRY TO START IT AND IT DOESN T TURN , 2 CYLINDERS WERE RUST AND I HAVE TO OPEN AND FIX IT ALL THE ENGINE
WHEN I WANT TO STAR IT AGAIN I BURN THE STARTER !!!
I FIX IT, AND NOTHING , IT DOESN´T START , AND FROM THE INTAKE WAS COMING OUT WHITE SMOKE !!!
A FRIEND SAY ME THAT A HAVE TO TAKE OFF ALL GLOW PLUGS AND RUN THE ENGINE...
IT TURN FAST AND SOUNDS LIKE A SEWING MACHINE!!!
NEXT I PUT THE GLOW PLUGS, 12 VOLTS IN THE PUMP SOLENOID , 5 SECONDS ON THE GLOWS ........

THE PROBLEM WAS THE HYDRAULIC LIFTERS THAT WERE UNLOADED
SORRY FOR THE ENGLISH !!

lifters lost prime, maybe cylinders are dry..might pull glow plugs, put 1 squirt of marvel oil into each cylinder. I have to do this on some large industrial engines, if they have set up.
