Can't Start 6.9 liter
 

I am new to diesels and this forum, but have found a lot of useful info on here from you all so I figured I would see if you can help me figure this problem out. I have a 1985 Ford 3/4 ton with a 6.9 liter that has not been started in 2 1/2 years. I got it form a friend who's husband passed away. I have put new glow plugs in it, and a new glow plug controller. The glow plugs were not staying on for more than 4 seconds when you first tried to start it. Now it stays on the correct amount of time, approx. 8 sec. I also relaced all of the rubber fuel lines since a lot of them were leaking. I bled the fuel system starting with the injectore furthest from the injection pump and worked my way back to the pump. If you dump raw diesel in the intake, it acts like it might start but never does. I have also tried WD-40 with the same result. Any other ideas on where to go from here? Is the white smoke coming from inside the intake ?

Is the air intake free of obstructions?

When you bled the system, did the hand pump have plenty of pressure on it? Im sure we can figure this out. We have some really savvy Ford guys running around on here that will have a better idea of a solution than me Im sure.:c:

The white smoke was comoing from inside the intake where the air cleaner mounts. It was free of any obstruction that I could see. I did not check the hand pump, but upon bleeding the system it seemed to have adequate pressure because when i pulled off the return line from the clsest injector it sprayed everywhere.

How did you bleed the system without using the hand pump?

I would crack each injector one at a time..have someone pumping the handpump. once you are getting 100% diesel coming out from around the injector, tighten the injector back up while the person is still pumping.. Thats how we bleed the fuel systems on the cats and detroits out here..

I had my wife turn over the engine while I bled each one.

I just replaced the in block fuel pump too just in case the newer fuel had put a hole in the bladder.

Make sure fuel flows from the return side on the injector pump and that the return line is open to the tank.

The return line on the injection pump is the metal line that faces the front of the truck correct? I siphoned all of the fuel out of the front tank since it had been in there for 3 years. It was brown and looked like it had oil mixed in it. I know that diesel has alot of oil in it and is greenish colored at the pump. My guess is water in the tank causing rust. Any comments?

You might need to drop the tank and flush it out real good. Unhook all of the fuel lines and flush them with gasoline (to clean them) and then flush them again with clean diesel. Put your tank back in, hook everything up, re-prime and try again. Thats what I would try at least.:c:

Fuel filters are probably pulugged up as well.

check and see if the one wire going to the injection pmp has power when the key is on if it doesnt check your fuses if it does then you are good.
