Not to Bright
So I bought a 50" DLP TV about 3yrs ago from Sears. I also bought there 5yr extended warranty. This TV has worked perfect until about a month ago. I give them a call and they send me a $300 replacment lap. I install the Lamp and it makes it worse. So a service man comes out today and says the Lamp Harness Thingamagig needs repalaced. So he calls to order the part and its not being made anymore. FYI is was a $900 part. So he is going to send it to the manufacturer to have it fixed. FYI $500 to Fix. So im without a TV for "3-4weeks". So I call Sears up and my warranty included a rental rembursment plan. YES!!!!
So I go down to RAC and get a Brand New Toshiba 47" 1080p LCD on Sear's Dime to rent until they get mine fixed. So this got me to thinking.
Original Cost of TV $999 on clearence
5yr Warranty $249
$1248 plus Tax Total
Replacement Lamp $300
Fix other Part $500
Labor to Service Man around $200
Rental for 4 weeks $215
$1215 Total
Before they had spent the first dime on fixing mine they could have just said the TV is unrepairable and give me a $999 credit. I would have went to Sears today and put another $500 with the $999 and got me another TV with another warranty.
Does this make any sense for them to spend $1215 to fix a TV I only paid $999 for???
It doesnt make any difference to me cause It will get fixed or replaced but that just makes NO Sence to me what so ever.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. My big screen with warranty, went out about 2-3 years into the warranty.
Service guy came out, ordered part, repaired tv...no charge
A year later...same chit....different (bigger) problem...no problem...ordered new TV and had it delivered, no charge
Recently, problem with screen...repaired....no charge, no problems.
IF it's a simple in home repair, do it. If it's a send away...replace it

but..........
what's their markup? A $900 part for you is probably a $50 part for them that's been charged off and sitting on a shelf for years. you already got $400 off that part by sending it in to have that fixed. after labor and burden it probably costs them $250 to repair it. not sure how the rental figures into it all tho.
