Ok I know this is the wrong section to post this question but the VW section seems pretty empty and slow to get a reply. I have an 02 golf tdi and the a/c was working great, then one day it just quit. I hooked my gauges up and it read 150psi on the high and low side, so it has a good charge. When I push the a/c button I hear a click but the compressor does not kick on. I don't want to buy a new compressor for nothing so hopefully somebody can tell me what to test before I spend almost 500 on a new compressor

Does the click come from the compressor, or from a relay? There are usually high and low pressure safety switches for the a/c system.

 

If your pressure system has a leak the A/C won't come on either. Maybe a refill is the only thing needed?

 

It has a good charge. I can't tell where the click is coming from. I have not had a chance to have someone help me so I can listen under the hood

 

How do you know? Did a shop weigh the filled up amount?

 

I hooked up my gauges and it had 150psi on both sides but the conpressor was not cycling. Also it did not slowly started cooling worse it just stopped all at once while I was driving it

 

If you suspect bad wiring, most compressors have a wire leading to the electric clutch. Find the connector in the middle of that wire, and unplug it.
Take a length of wire and run it from the compressor's wire to the plus (+) side of your battery.

If you hear a loud CLACK, the electric clutch is fine and you should check the car's wiring and fuses.
If you get nothing, the electric clutch is bad and the compressor will have to be replaced.

Ideally, if you can do this test while the car is running, you can see if the hub spins.

Take care to keep fingers and loose clothes away from moving pulleys and belts.

That would rule out a clutch that actuates properly but then slips so badly it won't generate pressure.
