Default Convertable options

My daughter will be driving soon, she wants a convertible, and needs an auto. What are my options on body styles? I'm all about MPG, because I'll be paying for fuel no dough, this is definably a long term investment so I want a nice reliable ride. Gota take care of the girls I know nothing about TDI's, but I would love for her to have one.

VW has built the Golf 3 and is building the 5 as an convertible in europe the old TDi with 90 hp, the new 5 with bigger hp, same engine applies for the beetle convertible.
Audi build currently the A3 as an TDi convertible, some goes for the BMW 1

There has never been a convertible diesel car sold in the USA. If you want one, you'll have to buy a cabrio or rag top beetle and swap in a TDI.

Isn't it cheaper to import one? 1300$ shipped to Houston.
No hassle, no problems...

Seems like a lot of trouble for a first car. Focus on safety and fuel economy, let her get some experience behind the wheel, then go searching for her dream car. Maybe for a college graduation present. Her dream car will probably change a few times between now and then, no need dumping a bunch of money into a passing phase. Good luck.
