How Many Miles
I know this is tough to answer since there are so many variables - but how many miles are the VW engines good for? How about the rest of the car?

The motor is generally considered bullet proof until 96,000 km when it may need a timing belt and a water pump. After that, the go pretty well for another 250,000 km without issue. The rest of the car - well it's a VW. sometimes they are good while others not so much. I've had both.
Back to the motor: they can overheat very easily and the block can split under this heat and under extreme boost (35 psi). The turbo's don't like more than 22 psi and they can and do coke up very easily if you plan on driving them softly and idle them at all.

I got a guy that I see once a year when he passes through, 390,000 miles on the original engine! It's a 96 Jetta! Cummins built these engines for VW for quite awhile!

Who builds the engines now?

The witch was made in early 1998 if I'm not mistaken. They remain mechanically pumped until 2001 (I think) and then swtiched to something similar the VP44 (still bosch) from 2002 and 2003. In 2004.5 they changed that to the PD TDI which was sort of a hybrid electronic rail version if you will. The new stuff 2008 is fully common rail and is supposed to be kick *** but i have yet to drive any.
