Default 1999 Jetta tdi

Hey guys the gf is looking for a new car I am trying to get her to look at a vw diesel cause she does alot of travelling. What can ya tell about a 1999 or somewhat close to that year range? What mpg can you expect? What are common problems they may run into? Thanks

timing belt, and other than that no idea what kind of problems you may run into, they seem to get around 40mpg if equipped with a manual, not sure what they get when equipped with an automatic i'm not sure what they get

The timing belt should last around 60k and there is a kit that has all the pulleys and a 100k belt. The only problem is after you replace the belt you need software like vag-com to set the timing. The intake should also be cleaned out periodically because of the egr running soot through it. And whatever you do don't gen one with an auto, they have nothing but probelms. I wanted one and did my research and IMO its cheaper and less headache to get a gasser that gets the same mileage.
