You can never have too much wheel speed in my opinion...it just depends on how aggressive your tires are, and how much power you are working with, and what track you are pulling on...personally i have a 5-spd with 3.54's with 35x13.50 Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ's and I pull in 4th low.
In a 5 spd, 4th gear is your straight threw gear. In a 6spd, 5th is your straight threw gear. I have pulled in 2nd high a few times and depending on the track is also a decent gear selection as long as it is a tight track.

I leave the line at 3500rpm's and it drops down to around 2800rpm's, but with in mind it is still a vp44 truck...the problem that i have if it is a dry track and i pull in too low of a gear, i blow the tires off and it quits fueling over 3000rpm, so the sweet spot for my truck is somewhere in between 2700 and 2900 rpm...
