Some Bad News For You Pullers
Still lookin for info if anybody can help out here.
In referance to the DOT number. I never realized there was such a thing as a Non Commercial DOT number.

Do you have to have the CDL prior to this number. Is there a certain order things have to go in. You have the CDL, USDOT and/or StateDOT number and Tag to cross state lines. I'm just wondering in what order they need to be done.
Not to mention the additional things that these things bring in. Medical Exam, Vehicle Safety Inspection, Proof of Required amount of insurance and the marker reay for placement on the truck.

I was pulled over a couple years ago for a class violation. The CHP was just getting ready to write me up when a injury accident occurred 500 feet behind us. He begrudgingly let me go to tend to the injured. I was looking at having everything impounded and a four digit fine.
Changed my dual to single wheels, use a tow along trailor ( marked 9995 lbs ) NOT a goose neck. Running a 10 tag like a 1/2 t pickup instead of a B26. Checked with local DOT, can go anywhere, no scales, no medical and log book.
Most i carry is sometimes a tractor and bushhog, weight around 15000 lbs.

i have heard some about this a few years ago, hence the reason i bought a 3/4 ton istead of a 1 ton. they say you need a cdl to pull almost everything with it, yet they wont let you take your test with it...something not right about that.

until they let me take my test with my truck that i have to pay more money to run then what im making then ill get legit untill then im NOT FOR HIRE. my dodge is a 3/4 ton and my trailer is 38' and will not be over 10K. my ford is a 1 ton 10K and i dont haul over 15K. Im not stopping at scales. come and get me.
Gee, and I think back to when I pulled cars all over central Ohio, out of Indiana, and Pennsylvania with my little 83 S-10(V-6/5spd) and a tow dolly... The only problem I ever had was in Pa.. When they didn't update the weather line and I got caught in a snowstorm from hell on the turnpike.. I never had any trouble going or stopping, but then I wasn't trying to race either
Ok; there is a lot of good information here and a lot of misinformation here.
NOT TRUE This does NOT apply to personally owned vehicles hauling personally owned property.
You DO NOT need a CDL for this. Unless you EXCEED 26,000 LBS. That means 26,001+ LBS. Check and see what the mfg label inside the cab says for the GVW and the registration card. Calculate whichever is higher. Do the same for the trailer. If you are at 26,000 or below you do NOT need a CDL. Even if it's someons else's property and for hire, you DON'T need one. If the GVW of my 2500HD is 10,000 lbs, and I want to pull a car trailer, for hire or not, rated at 16,000 LBS I DO NOT need a CDL. 10K + 16K = 26K. The only exception to this would be if I exceed the maximun overall length limit, which I probably would not.
If your GVW EXCEED's 10,000 LBS (10,001+) and it is NOT personally owned, you WILL need at Federal DOT # (These are FREE) and comply with all applicable laws; i.e. need a fire extinguisher, and flares/triangles atc. Youwill also need a Medical Certificate. No big deal, get your Dr to fill it out the next time you get a physical.

After reading your post you got me to look and see what the dealer has my 2500 registered at. I wish I had looked sooner as they have it registered for 8,000 lbs
So any time I hook to my uncles 21 ft, twin axle trailer I'm screwed as I sure weighs at least 1500 lbs. empty
