Default Trailer Brake Controllers

I bought a trailer brake controller and figured it would pretty simple to install. Wrong, it's in but wont work right. I have the pos, neg, stop wire in, and the brake wire (blue) ran all the way to the back to the plug. It wont work. Now I've got a question, there is a black wire coming off the plug at the back and it looks like they had it running to the pos. on the batt. but when i do that it locks up the trailer brakes. No clue why thats happening. The controller is on and the light wont got to green, it stays red and just gets dimmer when the power is on the lowest setting. It's got me, I have no idea whats wrong with it.

What Brand controller?
Any trailer sales company has a pre wired pigtail (plug & play) for your Dodge with a Teckosha controller (sp?) That should simplify things if thats your brand.

Is the break away switch on the trailer on?
Does the trailer work on other trucks?

If you using the 6 round plug on your trailer, some of them come wired differently. For some reason, can't tell you why they mix the ground and break wires up on the plug. I've run into this several times with the plug adaptors.

The $3 wire harness for your truck as was said in the last post would make this a very simple operation though.

If the light goes from dimmer to brighter as the brakes are tighter then you have the same one that I have, the brighter the light the harder the brakes are working. Like mentioned above just get the adapter for your truck, second and third gen have the same adapter also.

Adapter for the trailer plug or an adapter for the brake controller.

I have the adapter for the brake controller where it clips in right next to the steering column under the dash. Idk, why but the thing has the red light come on when you hit the brakes but the positive wire isn't even hooked up nemore.

Mine does the same thing, it sounds like it is just fine, if the brakes lock up when the lights are on the wire is switched between the brakes and the lights on the trailer, i have had this happen to me a few times.

Thing is the trailer wont do anything when its plugged up unless you run the black wire up to the pos. on the batt. but then the brakes lock up and dont move. When its unhooked the trailer moves freely but the controller wont kick in to apply pressure to brakes but the light works on the controller. 2morrow ima check the voltage coming out of the blue wire to see whats goin on and then trace down the wire that goes to the trailer brakes itself to make sure they match up, but they should.

What exactly does the black wire do? Is it like a 12v lead r sumthing like that? This whole thing has me confused. thanks for the help

Just to add, when the brakes are locked up on the trailer you can't adjust the controller at all to free the brakes, not even touching the brakes at all. You just have to unhook black wire.

The wires are backwards for the way your trailer is wired. There is a wiring diagram listed on the site here someplace. You need to check your trailer wiring against this chart to make sure the right wires are going to the right pins.
