Be careful even doing the pulling yourself. You can haul other people's stuff all day long and in the event of an accident your insurance company should cover your trailer and it's load provided it is attached to your truck.
The catch here, and how sticky they are on it varies with companies, agents and their accident investigators. Legally speaking though and strictly following the laws of all states at the time I went through all my legal discussions about this with attorney's and the insurance underwriters group, if any payment has been made or agreed upon prior to the use of the trailer then you have just become a commercial entity and your private insurance is no longer valid. In other words they do not have to cover anything if during their investigation somebody slips and mentions they paid you even gas money.
In the legal world payment includes not only cash but also any goods or services with a cash value that is exchanged for services.
So keep this strictly legal. Do not accept any money, or agree upon any payment until that load is safely off your trailer and then you can accept a donation if they offer it. End of story. Anything other then this and you open yourself up for personal liability.

I can't even tell you how many trailer rental reservations I had that they would show up in some jeep cherokee or mini van to rent my 18ft steel stock trailer that weighs in over 3000 pounds empty, wantin to hook it up to a bumper hitch with no brake controller and haul they're horses around.
I always wanted to send it out just once just to show them how stupid they are but I didn't, I always refused the rental.
