Problem with trailer brakes locking up...
Hey Guys Hope all is well. I have a 06 2500 CTD auto. The problem I have is this. If I hook and adaptor (from Wal-mart) into the factoy 7 Blade plug in the rear of the truck to change it to a 5 pin so I can pull my trailer the brakes lock up after rolling about a foot forward. I have no brake box in the truck so there should be no signal to the trailer. I can back it up all I want. This has happend with two trailers... Any Ideas?

Yep....very simple! When you use an adapter from 7 pin to 5 pin, it is very common that your trailer wiring will not match your factory outlet. This was the reason for everybody going to the 7 pin style. The problem is that there are still a ton of trailers out there with the older 5 pin plugs on them.
I would say in your case you have your 'hot' wire adapting to the brake lead in the trailer. Electric brakes only grab well moving forward, this is why you can back up but not go forward.
You need to use a test light to see what your pins do coming out of the adapter. Mark each one, and then take your trailer plug apart and re-wire to match your output from the truck. If you are going to all of this work, my suggestion would be to get a 7 blade plug for the trailer and convert the whole thing and get rid of the adapter!

I went and looked at the adaptor after I poseted this and you can acctualy open them up and change what pin is Aux and which is for the brakes. I have a Brake box on the way as soon as I find $100 to dump on it (next payday). Just need to go hook up to the trailer and see if the wiring is correct now! Thanks. I LOVE THIS NEW SITE!!!!

Longhorn is right. I went through the same thing with my truck when I first tried to tow with it. Watch out thought, you should have to replace a fuse. If you tow a larger trailer that is charged by the truck, you might have poped the fuse for the charging wire. Most 7 to 6 adapters have only 2 wires that can be changed. Some brands run one set up, others run the other. If you use the adapter, you just have to open it up and change the 2 wires, then check your fuses.

In my Dodge, it was inder the hood with everything else. I think there is another small fuse block in the cab, but I have never messed with it. I drove with it like that for months before I got my 5th wheel and needed it. As far as I could tell, it didnt kill anything else, but its always better safe than sorry.
