I went and pick up my 24' enclosed trailer for our move to TX. I pulled it about 50 miles empty and grabbed the hubs to see how they felt 3 of them where warm and 1 was cool. I don't know anything about ez lube hubs that my new trailer has is this normal? I pulled off the rubber dust caps and could see a little grease should I add some more and what kind or specs should it be?

If they are like the ez-lube hubs on my car trailer, just pump some grease in the fitting, I use farm lube becasue it is cheap. I think that they are actually susposed to be lubed with special grease that is like $5 or $6 each. I hope that this helps.

EZ Lubes should have a grease nipple right there on ever hub, just shoot some grease in there and drive away. Being hot is not normal for them. Shoot grease in there until you see it coming out the cracks and you should be good. Any old grease will do. The factory may not have gotten enough lube in there.

 

Just lookin through the original post again, I have never seen EZ Lubes come with dust covers of any kind. The only removable cover should be an outside cap on the end that would either screw off or snap off to expose the bearings.

 

My ez lube have a rubber gromet that covers the hole with the grease zert in it, just like the picture. I usually put about 4-5 pumps in every 500-1000 miles, just depens on the weight that i have had on the trailer. They do get hot no mater what but they do stay cooler when properly filled.

These must be the new model's, I haven't used any new axles in a few years. Ordered and had em direct shipped to customers and been using left over axles for my own projects. This is a good idea they had to put em in there like that though.

 

Ok I'll add some more and mine have a rubber grommet just like 06's.

I pumped them up, but I didn't lift the tire off the ground and spin it during oops. I though I read somewhere that grease should come out when they are full, but I didn't see any should I add more?

 

When you fill them up grease will have to come out of somewhere. It will run out of room in the confined space in there and have to go someplace.

Now let me add my dissclaimer here. They have evidently change the hub style since I worked with any of these last so if you see any directions that say other wise pay attention to them.

Worse case scenario though, all you will be doing is wasting grease. There is no way to overgrease something other then just makin a mess and drawing dust to it if it is oozing out of everywhere. Grease itself can do no harm.

 

If you overfill them you will blow our the seals, thus causing you to have to put more grease in than you have to. Like I stated earlier I only put 5 or 6 pumps in every 500-1000 miles depending on the loads that I have had on the trailer.

 

I only put 5 in the ones that where cooler and 10 in the others, but I never saw any grease even on the backing plate. It looks like on the ones that got warm they didn't get the grease gun on there good and got it all over the zerk. I guess if I put to much I'll have a mess to clean and seals to fix just hope it don't get on my brakes.
