Hey guys over the past couple of years about 20 Amish families have moved into our area. My son in law has been doing some hauling for them but with working full time he is limited on how much he can do, so I'm gonna start doing some. What I'm looking for opinions on is, he is charging them 2 bucks per loaded mile, is that fair, too much, or not enough ? I'm only working with a 7k car trailer at the moment, but will consider upgrading if enough work comes my way. So what do you guys think, any input is appreciated.

 

When I haul livestock for them I charge $1.50/loaded mile so I think you are pretty fair...I will charge a hookup fee if its a short trip so that it makes it worth my time.

 

So if you don't mind me asking how much hookup fee do you charge ? Son in law has been charging a flat 20 bucks on short trips under 10 miles and that seems kinda low

 

$50, if they are one of my neighbors or a regular customer I'll give them at break at $40

 

20 dol you wont be in business long. insurance is 18k a year for me with 4 hotshot trucks. if you are only making a couple hundred a day, you aren't going to make it. hotshot work is tough work. need to be flexible. need to average 2 dol a mile on ALL miles you travel in a year, but if you are running less than 100 mile trips, that's not even enough.

 

I haul for a company that makes cedar greenhouses and I haul 5days a week for them usually. I have a flat rate of $250 for short loads and $2.10 a loaded mile for any load outta the $250 mile range! I haul with my own truck, buying my own fuel, and I have to carry $750,000 worth of insurance that runs me about $440.00 a month and also wear and tear on my vehicle expenses also falls on me! He provides the special built tilt trailer with winch and roller system on it so I never get to deadhead a load coming home cause of how the trailer is set up but I bring home before all my expenses $1500 -$2200 a week usually
