Gooseneck Trailer Build
So my dad is gonna let my buy his trailer off him and I'm going to rebuild it and convert it to a gooseneck.
My plans for the trailer are:
- Upgrade axels to 2 7k pound units with electric brakes
- New wheels and tires
- Run all new wiring and LED lights
- New deck pressure treated 2xwhatever
- Possibly/probably add winch on front
I took some approximate measurements as it was starting to get dark and I didn't feel like fumbling with a light to get exact dimensions yet anyway.
The deck measures 25' 20" long, 81.5" wide. Across the wheels is pretty close to 8'. The frame outside to outside is 74" and is constructed out of 6x2 channel that's 3/16" thick. It's only got like 3 actual crossmembers and they're made of the same channel iron.
I took some pics but all I've got for Internet is my phone right now and since I go through Verizon, I've only got 2gb of data and I have to share with another phone so I'll post the pics when I go to my sisters tomorrow and use her wifi.

Haha yeah I guess 26' 8" makes more sense, Tireman. Sorry, I was pretty tired last night when I posted.
And for the use of the trailer, nothing specific. If it fits on it and doesn't extremely overload it, I'll haul it.
It will be a slow project. I just moved down here to my dads a couple days ago and I've still got to go job hunting. From what I'm hearing around town there's like 500 some jobs open now with more to come. By 2016 I think the guy said, 9000 gas and oil wells are going to be drilled in the area. So with gas, oil, mines, railroad, and shops in town I should be able to find a decent job. I gotta get registered to start class in the fall too. Anyway, back on topic, I'll take and post up pics throughout the build and I'm sure I'll have questions to ask as well. Feel free to give some input. It's my first time on a project of this caliber and I want to make sure it done right.

It appears to have 3500 pound axles in it already. You can buy complete backing plate assemblies for around $50.00 each from a trailer supply store. A diamond plate deck will be much better than wood if you plan on dragging something on the trailer and it won't need as much up keep. The winch is a must! I also have back up lights on my trailer as well.
I'm not doing anything with the axles that are currently on there. I'm planning to put two 7000 pound axles under it. I'll price what diamond plating the whole thing will cost when I get to that point but wouldn't it add a lot of weight? What thickness do you think would be best?
I think I'm going to run 8" channel under the existing frame to create a new "chassis" and have the existing 6" channel basically become my deck frame. That will give me a more secure way to mount the neck.
I finished tearing up the deck today and that's all I'll be able to do until I get some money coming in. I'll post pics probably tomorrow.

Finished tearing up the deck and got it hauled off to the dump.

In this picture you can tell that its a bit bent on the back left corner. I guess a piece of machinery got dropped on that corner while being unloaded. Is there any way to fix that without cutting it out and replacing that section?
And what happens when you load heavy with no cross members:

Running the new 8" channel under neath like you we're saying would straighten up that top channel.
I'm sure you could straighten up that channel by itself but to make it perfectly straight isn't too likely.
