Default Mud Countrys or Xtreme a/t's?

well its time for new tires. Ive got it narrowed down to either the Dick Cepek mud countrys or the Pro Comp xtreme a/t's. I mostly do pavment/gravel roads and muddy construction sites hauling my 6000 lb work trailer. but enjoy getting out on the trail every so often. I live in michigan and we get alot of snow and ice on the roads. Curious to know if anyone has run either of these tires and what your thoughts are on them. I have a set of 35x12.5x20 Interco Vortracs on now and they just plain suck at everything! I purchased the truck used with 32000 mi on it so Im guessing that the Vortracs have 32000 or less on them they have some tread life left on them but they dont even grip good on dry pavement. I just want to get as much info as I can on these tires before dropping a big amount of $$$ on a new set.

heres links for both tires.

btw I have a 07 Dodge Ram 3500 mega cab srw with a 6" rev Tek suspension lift.

Just by looking at the information on line, I would run the Pro Comps. They have a higher load rating, and the tread pattern look like it would give a quieter ride.

thanks for the quick reply! yeah I like the 40,000 mile warranty on the pro comps, but some of the reviews I've read on them were mixed. something about a recall on some of their tires due to side wall blow-outs. that may have been on the old a/t's though? all the reviews I read up on the mud countrys were positive. the pro comps are a directional tire, so does that mean you have to take them off the wheels and flip em to rotate them correctly?

Either that or just move them front to back.
Ever thought about Goodyear Wrangle DuraTrac's?
Goodyear Tires | SUV and Truck Tires | Wrangler DuraTrac
I think I'm going to try them onc my Silent Armor's are worn down.

Yeah I have seen the new dura tracs. Looks like they would be very quite and good in the snow.I was considering this tire before I saw the pro comps. The 325/60/20LT (35.6x13x20)at 3750 lbs has the highest load rating as well.the pro comps only had a 3300 lb rating and were E's so I'm guessing the goodyears are E's as well. Well I think that the goodyears are at the top of the list now. They are the best suited for my type of driving and road conditions we get around here. I would hands down get the dick cepeks if I did more offroading they are an awesome tire but just arnt as well suited for pavement and towing.Plus the softer rubber means new tires a lot sooner.thanks for the input RAWilliams.

I would look at the dick cepek FCIIs also. I have heard a lot of good things about them. I havent heard anything about how a heavier truck handles them though. The duratracs are pretty awesome. One of my buddies has them on his 01 24V 2500 and they eat anything you put in their path. The xtreme ats are decent tires. Once they are worn down to like half tread though they are pretty slick in most conditions.

Thanks for the info smoking ram. That video gives some good info. So Dick Cepeks are Made by Mickey Thompson? Didn't know that! I hear that the Mickey Thompsons/Dick Cepeks have a softer rubber compound for true off-road performance and probably wouldn't last so long on a 3500 megacab? Seeing that f-150 tearing through the corners is cool, I would like to see them do that on wet pavement with a diesel on some Michigan roads that are full of potholes that eat small cars for a snack ! Well it looks like all 3 of the tires im thinking of purchasing are pretty darn good

The sidewall blowouts involved the original A/T's when they were first introduced.

I'm running the X-A/T's right now. Got 32,000 miles on them and I'm guessing there's another 15,000 on 'em still, but I'm really **** about rotating them. They do well in just about everything except thick mud. They may bite just a bit harder in mud compared to a regular A/T, but they ain't no mudder! They have a slight howl going down the road as they wear but nothing at all intrusive.
