Nitto Terra Grappler AT tires?

I've got an offer of a set of these tires and wanted feedback. I'm thinking of installing them on my 2WD and have an option of either 265/75/16's ($540 installed) or 285/75/16's ($700 installed). I put 2" longer springs in the front, a while ago, but I'm not sure if the 285's will fit. If they do, I'd prefer to go that route. Anybody got any feedback on this tire?

Dr. Evil 04-09-2007 05:54 PM

I have never had a set....but have read a number of posts on them...think youll get average miles out of them. I doubt they will wear like a BFG or Michelin. But, they are a good looking tire.

Uncle Bubba 04-09-2007 06:16 PM

Toyo M-55. A nice smooth, quiet highway tire that pulls through the mud better then just about any mud tire I have ever had. It's also commercial rated tire so it should wear for quit a while.

The Nitto Terra Graplers are my next set They look alot better in person then in photos

Apparantely, some claim to get close to 100 k out of the M-55. They are not cheap, but they are and awesome tire. Dont think you can go wrong with any of the Toyos.

I'd hope you'd get 100K out of them at $227 a tire ... a bit rich for my blood!

Now, back to the Nitto's ... :tttt:

The wife thinks the rims look too small too. Anyone got pics of 285's on 18" rims?

They are $325 where I live....

scarecrow 04-09-2007 09:24 PM

i have heard good things about the nittos......actually there is a set in the junk yard near my house i am trying to get. they are 285s to....

piperca 04-09-2007 09:28 PM

How about Eagle 187 rims with 285-65-18 Nitto's?????

Anybody got any pics?

The rims I'm looking at are 18x9's with a 5" backspace ... will these work okay with my 2WD?

hntruckman 04-09-2007 09:59 PM

i had a set they were alright tires good traction were a little easy to puncture i had i think one plug in each tire.

redneckbuckeye 04-10-2007 08:37 PM

I had a set on my other truck and they wore horrible, I only got a little over 20k out of them and I had them rotated every 5k. They seemed very soft.

piperca 04-10-2007 09:52 PM

Okay, I'm having a backspace dillema.

The rims I'm looking at are Eagle 187's, 17x9, 5" backspace, +2mm offset.

Will these work on my truck? How far will they stick out? Remember, I have a 2WD, if it makes a difference.

piperca 04-11-2007 11:04 PM

Hey, Dr. Evil, I kinda like this Toyo setup

http://photos.ebizautos.com/4132/1574603_13.jpg

But I guess you have to buy the whole package to get them

http://photos.ebizautos.com/4132/1574603_1.jpg

Believe it or not, it's the wife's idea! :tttt:

Dr. Evil 04-11-2007 11:22 PM

Hey, as long as its got a Cummins in it...go for it...

Well, I know the trouble youve had with your truck and I cant say that Id blame you for jumping ship. That is ONE sharp looking truck. If I could find one with a 7.3L Id consider it (especially iof it was as nice looking as that truck)...

So, did you buy it?

Dr. Evil 04-11-2007 11:23 PM

Do you know what wheels those are? Very nice...

Uncle Bubba 04-11-2007 11:41 PM

Oh lordy, I thought we were through all this Ford crisis!!!

piperca 04-12-2007 12:09 AM

Shane, I've no idea what those wheels are. No, I didn't buy it ... yet! I only stumbled upon it this evening. It's a 2002, 7.3 liter ... the last of the good ones! She's got 66+K and they're wanting $27K for it.

Funny how that always happens; every time I need new tires, I end up with a new truck payment!

Uncle Bubba 04-12-2007 12:15 AM

Seems like alot of money, but I guess it's about right if you get down to it. Bet you could find that Dodge on the next lot with some really cool tires on it.

Dr. Evil 04-12-2007 08:37 AM

That is a lot of money...you can buy a 24V with a p-pump conversion, twins, and DTT trans for $29k.....its listed in the DTR classifieds right now.

piperca 04-12-2007 08:49 PM

I slept on it and have decided to stick with what I've got. I've an appointment on Saturday to get the 285 Nitto's installed ... $680. Since there is an issue with backspace, I've decided to keep the stock rims ... for now!

Dr. Evil 04-12-2007 08:59 PM

Unfortunately, I cant help you with the 2 wd stuff

piperca 04-14-2007 06:29 PM

Well, got them on and I must say ... WOW! The ride is awesome! The pics are not the best (camera), but you get the idea!

Now for the 5" ... :cp:

Dennis, is that your slippers next to my bed??? You sound just like her! "give:

Uncle Bubba 04-14-2007 08:13 PM

Ya we were talkin about this the other night. She said you were the craziest fool she ever met. You were at school or somthin.:tttt: Come by and visit more often. You can play trucks with us.:sen:

piperca 04-14-2007 08:58 PM

Now I got to find some nice black rims. The guy who mounted the tires said the rims need replaced. There must be about 10 ounces of lead on each wheel.

I'd like to find a 16" that doesn't stick out too far ... anyone got any advice?

BTW: The wheels that's on the truck are the steel wheels, chromed, which I believe have a 4.75" backspace. If I was going to go with a 4.5" to 5.0" backspaced wheel, would this work?

Ive got some black wheels bookmarked. Will have to find them for ya. Black wheels are great - look good and are CHEAP.

Uncle Bubba 04-14-2007 09:11 PM

Is it the tires out a round or the rims. If your rims are that bad, what did you run into. If the tires that bad I think I would have to be talkin to somebody. Did it take that much weight with the old tires?

piperca 04-14-2007 10:28 PM

I really didn't pay attention to what was on the other tires. What could cause the tires to be a problem? Maybe it was the guy who was balancing them? I don't really know.

Uncle Bubba 04-14-2007 10:39 PM

Sometimes a bad batch of tires will just roll off the assembly line. As the tires wear they will change the center of balance and will make the weights in the wrong place. This shortens the life span. That's why they came out with the Dyna Beads that are just in simple terms like BB's you put in the tire and centrifical force is supposed to put them where they need to be to balance the tire, this way they adjust to the changinging tire charactoristics. But they have their problems to. When I had the Truxxus Radials on I ran into this problem with them. They were Bald within 15,000 miles. That was an expensive lesson learned in tires.

Dr. Evil 04-15-2007 12:52 AM

Andrew....dont bother with tire weights...especially if you are getting some new wheels. As Dennis already mentioned, order some Dynabeads from these guys:

http://www.innovativebalancing.com/

I will NEVER put on another set of hammer-on wheel weights.

piperca 04-15-2007 01:36 PM

That sounds too easy!

All I need now is the handle of two spoons and I can install the tires myself! :ok: (Brings back childhood memories) :tttt:

Uncle Bubba 04-15-2007 02:07 PM

Naw you aint a kid no more, the toys are bigger now. Now it takes a pry bar, a hammer, a bottle of starter fluid and a lighter and in a pinch you can change your tire with alot of work.

Do you have a video? Sounds like fun! "f"

Uncle Bubba 04-15-2007 02:49 PM

No way. If I had the money for a video camera back then I would'nt have been changin tires like that. Not even I'm that cheap. And ya, sometimes if you sprayed to much starter fluid in there to set the bead that little smilie is exactly what it looked like.

Dr. Evil 04-15-2007 02:58 PM

I have seen the videos of guys doing this - I would like to try it but Im not sure I have big enough cojones.

Uncle Bubba 04-15-2007 03:10 PM

It's actually slick as hell when it works. DISCLAIMER: BUT NOT VERY SAFE.
That tire pops right out on the rim and won't budge. I've done it on tractor and truck tires when I'm in a pinch. Out way back in the boonies one night 4 wheelin in an old full size blazer and rolled the tire off the rim. jacked the corner up, sprayed it, lit it, added a can a fix a flat and on my way to town.

piperca 04-15-2007 03:16 PM

The two spoons method sounds safer ... I think I'll buy myself a bike!

Uncle Bubba 04-15-2007 03:43 PM

Check this thread out and tell me if this is what your talkin about with spoons. Whitmore said one of these guys was our own Dr Evil, but he wouldn't say which one.
