I am in the market for a good duty gun was thinking the sig 229 .40 or a glock or something else? needs to be able to hold at least 10 in the mag 13 preferred and comfortable to where for at least 12hrs in and out of vehicle

the only requirements they have is double action only, and in .40, .45, 9mm (semi) or 357 (revolver)

and I dont want a revolver to few shots and too hard to reload in time of need

I will always be carrying my backup Ruger LCR .38sp +P and the last ditch boot knife

you picked two guns, that don't have safety, If you want a DAO gun you can still get a 1911 PARA ORDNANCE LDA that will hold 16+1 of 40 S&W ammo

 

What does everyone else in the dept carry? If you can comfortably use and shoot what majority of the rest are carrying and can shoot it well I would feel best knowing that in a bad situation My firearm is interchangeable with the rest around me. Magazines, Cal, hell if your malfunctions (which happens to ALL firearms at some point) you can pick up another and know it.

Just a thought.

 

all hand guns are our personal theres everything from glocks to S&W to sig to HK the only thing they provide us is a shotgun and an ar-15

we do have to use there ammo tho

I looked into the S&W .40 last night seems like an alright unit and I am not to worried bout a safety my holster locks and i dont keep my finger in the gaurd

My only dislike about the S&W is in a tactical situation, you cannot fire the weapon with the magazine removed. As far as comfortable to carry the weight factor will come into play and that is why most departments have moved to Glock. I am not a Glock fan but my everyday carry gun is a Glock 36 and my comp gun is a Glock 35. The reason is...100% reliablity. I took a defensive handgun course a few weeks ago and part of the course is praticing clearing jams. Do you know how all but impossible it is to set up a glock to jam. Sig is a reliable weapon but they are also fairly heavy...advantageous if you want to beat someone to death with it but not when you can use the bullets to shoot them. The Para P16-40 LDA is a great gun but Para has had some issues with customer service since there move to North Carolina. I am not partial to Glocks but for a duty gun i dont believe that there is any better choice. Just my $.02

 

Anybody that says the Sig is a heavy pistol needs to hit the gym more and yes you can shoot the M&P without the mag...some old school S&W pistols have/had the mag safety, but the M&P in my hands right now will shoot without a mag in it....Most departments have gone to the glock due to glock's superb marketing skills and all but giving them away to leo departments and then selling em cheap to them making bean counters happy...oh and glock has a recall out on 4th generation pistols and some 3rd generation that used 4th gen parts...

Personally I'd take a good hard look at the S&W M&P in either the 9mm or the 45ACP and skip the 40 short and weak...

Now I've got 2 Sigs (239 & 229 both in 357sig) and love them, but for a duty weapon that will be exposed to all kinds of weather & abuse why not go M&P, they are superb pistols, can take all kind of abuse, you can exchange the backstrap to fit your hand better and ya can get em in either 9mm or 45...

 

You are entitled to that opinion, however i have had nothing but issues out of a M&P. It took 800+ rounds for it to finally settle down on a point of aim. Before you say it this is by no fault of my own. I tried firing from a bench also. The Sig is quite a bit heavier than either of the other guns i recommended and also the one you recommended, i didnt say it was a bad gun, just for daily comfort the lighter you can get the better for comfort. The 4th gen Glock, i should clarify, i am not a fan of any of the changes glock made. this is the reason that both mine are early 3rd gen. I do have one thing i completely disagree on and that is skipping 40 smith. 40 smith is a great little round and i prefer it over 9mm for the extra grain of bullet and the "stopping power". I do however realize that its not what you shoot em with its where you shoot them. If it was me i would skip the 9mm completely unless you are just training with it. 40 has a better recoil pattern that allows you to get back on target faster. Also in saying 40 S&W i wasnt originally referring to the M&P but since you mentioned it there are certain models of it that do have a magazine safety. Hopefully that addresses all of the previous posters points in contention. if not however i refuse to get into the ever arguable which is better glock vs ???? debate. I will say this though. there is a reason other than marketing that has brought Glock to where it is. says a little something too since most DOD contractors use them.

 

well All im gonnna say is I love carrying my xd-.40 in 4" barrel length. although the newest glock is a really nice fit I just still think my 40 beats it. id either get an XD or a SIG im looking very hard at the comparable Sig 229 couple guys in my Dept. have them and man they are NICE!!!

 

I have the 239 .40 for winter time conceal carry and i am impressed pared with the crossbreed holster i forget its there

I dont want a brand new glock they just have me on the fence

all the California highway patrols use the mp .40 and there nice

I dont want to go any other cal then 40 if i can help it we have oogles of .40 and I personaly have a few thousand rounds of .40 (local store was selling PMC for $10 for 50 it was a no brainer)

the XD is a good one never thought bout it hmmm............

 

If your stuck with the 40 short and weak and already have a 239 (that's my summer carry) then get a Sig 229 in 40, much better than the glock, same operating system/controls as the 239 & ya can't go wrong with a sig, plus ya get the leo discount...

And still, anybody that says the sig is heavy needs to get off the computer and into the gym....

I've carried the Beretta 92 in a duty holster (and concealed) for 12+ hours at a time and it was not heavy..but then again, I was going to the gym every now and again....

Won't get into the 40 short and weak thing except it's no better of a "man stopper" than the 9mm has less rounds than the 9mm and smaller/lighter/wimpier bullets when compared to the 45...and the recoil is snappier/kicks more than the 9mm and not as easily controlled as the 45 or as quick back on target than the 9mm or the 45 for 2nd shot follow ups...

Stay away from the XD as a duty pistol...if ya want plastic go with the M&P, you can't go wrong with a M&P.....
