I've never known a dealer that wouldn't but they are gonna charge a fee for it. It's like free money for them, no work involved except gettin their mail.

yeah I got a list of the dealers in my area and some charge a fee plus tax and some just charge a fee. I found a dealer that only charges $20. I think I found a nice gun........

Pay attention to the ammunition...most mil surp x54R is Berdan-primed and corrosive....watch the commercial closely as well.

Nice buy. He states, " I sell more of these than I can hand make." If he's selling more than he can make, I sure hope you get "yours."

I wont be shooting the military rounds as this is a hunting gun and the military rounds arent good for hunting.

Uh... the 7.62x54R has a whole heck of a lot more punch than a .308... IMO its got a little more punch than a 30-06. Its not as inherently accurate as a .308, but its got serious stopping power.

GRI, IIRC your in eastern NY. Personally, I hunt out there a lot (mostly around Rome and Tug Hill). A rifled 12ga with a good sabot will easily make a 100yd shot. I took a nice size doe last year at 175yds.

You could go with 45/70, but its awful big, and definitely overkill. a 7mm-08 is a great cartridge and Dick's, Gander Mountain, and most sporting stores carry them. Its lighter than a .308 but much flatter (not that you need it).

For bigger cartridges, .356 Win, .450 Marlin, .444 Marlin, or .35 Whelen are all overkill but you can get the majority of them quite cheap.

As long as you stay away from anything with "Magnum" in the name, you should be able to find a decent gun cheap.

I do like the Mosin idea... You used to be able to buy them at gun shows for $40-50. They were hella powerful, and if you got stranded out in the cold, you could burn the darn thing for heat and not really care because its so cheap. Depending on the model, some are 2-3 MOA accurate. After all, the story of "Enemy at the Gates" is based on a sniper with a Mosin...

sorry. Didn't choose my words very carefully. I'll remember to think before I type next time. :argh:

There is a ton of soft point Russian mil surp that is excellent for hunting...it is being repackaged and sold as hunting ammunition, but is still Berdan primed and corrosive. Remember, the NATO and Geneva Convention standards for military FMJ bullets wasn't adopted by a lot of the countries running the 7.62x54R caliber, among others....

There is Nagant ammo out there from the 1930's still being sold in the spam cans........
