Flash is ok, sound "requires" a class III license.

im not a fan of "silencers", i keep a 1911 .45 next to my bed and each room has a loaded 12 ga in it. Its gonna be a loud a** event when i start shooting, esepcially when u grab for that AK and rack it back. Ive had to be in the situation of choosing to fire or not, about 5 yrs ago, less then a week after i back from IADT for the army, i was out deer hunting and on the way to my deer stand when some drunk trespasser/poacher decided to just start slingin slugs in my direction(and yes i was in orange clothing from head to toe), and one of the slugs impacted the tree not a foot in front of my face and another less 3 ft way, so i drew a bead on him and let me tell you, that is one scary moment for an 18 yr old, leying behind the cover of a fallen tree with some drunk ass 40 plus yr old man with your cross hairs on his chest at 20 yrd distance whether to return fire or coax the man down, i chose the latter and am glad i did, he put his gun down and sat right where i told him and neither on of us moved until the conservation officer got there, he was arrested and havent seen him since. I never want to be in that situation again, but i am better prepared if i have to be. It was the racking of that 12 ga that got that man to realize that he was screwed if he kept firing in my direction so id rather let it be heard that you mean business

My brother has the Mossberg 500 and I have the Remington 870. Hands down the 870 is a smoother firing gun with less recoil & better control. The 500 you can usually pick-up cheaper then the 870, about $30-50bucks less. The 500 has a fixed modified choke, the 870 has interchangeable chokes. The safety on the 500 is has a better location for home defense then the 870. The 500 usually comes with 2 barrels, a short stubby one and a 26in barrel IIRC, the 870 has a 28'in barrel IIRC. Personally the 870 is a better choice, my brother agrees!

On the the other hand, I have a .45 for home protection! The .45 will take care of business plus my wife can handle it. There is also the 9mm which is another good option, but a 9mm is usually just going to piss someone off!

How do you get less recoil? A pump is a pump, nothing but a pipe with a shell held to your shoulder. And the 500 has screw in chokes from improved all the way down to extra full turkey tubes.

The weight of the gun iteslf has a lot to do with recoil action. The lighter weight the gun the harder it kicks. I got a featherweight Winchester 1200 that will hurt ya if your not ready for it.

Yeah I know that but they are pretty much identical. They even feel the same in my hands only slight difference in ergonomics. Why the difference?

Buckshotmckee 09-23-2009 08:35 PM

Aside from the weight of the gun, but the way/quality of the gun itself. My brothers 500 has a fixed choke in both of the barrels. His 500 is about 12yrs old. He bought it @ big 5. I don't know if that has anything to do with it?

The LOP and cheek weld between the Mossy's and 870's are pretty much the same....only thing I can think of is one has a different recoil pad than the other one, unless the 870 is wood stock/forend or has something else to make it weigh more.

Otherwise I dunno either.....???

Yes, the Big 5 gun is a very low end 500A. They market that package for sale all over the place, two barrels, 18" cylinder bore/28" modified choke, about $220.

There are a multitude of barrels and chokes available for the 500's...almost more than for the 870's.

A Mossberg 500A with 28" barrel with removable chokes, up against a Remington 870 with same style barrel, there won't be much difference.

The Mossy may have a little more wiggle in the forend and pump rails than the Remington but it will function quite well....some say the Mossy's will run longer than the Remingtons due to this. Kinda like the AR vs. AK thing.

O well I don't know then? Mine is 14yrs old and has the wood furniture. Came with the slug barrel and smooth bore with 3 choke tubes. Seems to do the same shoulder damage as daddy's 870. I like mine better. I like the safety anthe pump release better. Maybe I'm just partial to mine. ;)

I started shooting the low recoil tactical/LE rounds a few years ago.

Less pain on the shoulder with just as much damage out the other end. Win/Win to me.

:yeah:
