I shoot alot around 500-600 rounds out of my 22-250 I uprgraded from a 90 dollar bushnell to the redfield, because I losing zero all the time and it was ruining shots for me, I would always be 2MOA left when it went outta zero, Shooting 500 yards thats 10 inches to left. So I bought a New scope and upgraded to weaver grand slam rings and bases. But today I made two shots all with one hit and no corrections I shot 435 yards with 5 minutes of adjustment and then made a 567 yard shot on a deer size boulder and that was 7 minutes of correction from a hundred yard zero. What scared me was that when I made the 435 yard shot I went and looked at my steel disc and it was right where I had aimed for I didnt think I could do that yet Using a Ruger M77 30-06 that has a full barrel bedding job ( bought it that way but it been working) and a Nice and crisp two pound trigger. I reload everything so far and with 52Gr of H3850 with CCI Primers and 180G Nosler Partician I shot .52'' at 100y group off my rifle bag. Like you said when you have confidence in your rifle it makes it easier, I can generally tell when its me, the gun, or the ammo and most of the time its me !!

I like mil reticles just because Mil reticles use dashes rather than dots and find them easier to range with, but I wrap my head around MOA better because thats all I have used. I know one mill is 3.6 inches at 100 yards, and its three yards and 1000 yards, and mil scopes go in .10 of a mill so 10 clicks are 1 mil. Which makes it nice so say you half a mil low you correct five clicks. I guess it comes down to what some one likes best. .. But Im wanting to do competitions in long range shooting I belive they are called tactical long range ( may be wrong) but its more challenging and intereasting than sitting at a bench and shooting at a 1000 yard taget...

Sounds good man. I get the feeling that you will progress very quickly and will out grow your current equipment tho. You should really start considering getting a 7mm and setting a PST on top of it. That will be real fun for you for a couple of years and will get you out to 1000y with only around 19-20 moa of drop at your altitude if you load the 168 bergers with around 73 gr of h1000.

what range finder do you use and what ballistic program? also do you have a wind meter? i use a leupold TBR 1000 rangefinder and a cheep caldwel wind meter then i enter the info into either "shooter" or applied ballistics on my phone to get my firing solution.

I like using moa with a moa retical its kinda the same concept as the mil/mil setup but like you said it comes down to which ever works best for you to make quick corrections after seeing the splash of a miss.

around here the shooting competitions your talking about are called tactical marksman and are shot from 100 to 800 yards because thats the limit of the local range. they are shot in stations and require you to shoot from various positions simulating different conditions and targets.

i plan to do some shooting tomorrow might try to get a couple videos or at least some pics.

Well my gear consits of a cheap Bushnell range Finder, binoculars, as for wind meter I guess it. Actually on our ranch we have tower sprinklers and we have wind meters on then so I cheat and just go to the piviot and get the reading of it till I can afford one. and I used Hornady Ballistics Table to get a rough Estimate of how much drop I have and used it and it close but not perfect. Hmm you got me thinking again about geeting a magnum cartridge. Remington came out with a new SPS Long range which is a heavy barreled rifle chamberd in 25-06, .300 Win Mag, a 7mm Rem Mag. Im only 20 years old and I graduate College with an Associtaes, In a week and a Half and I hope I can go work for either CDOT, Caterpillar, or the railroad as a mechaninc. Then which I can save so money and get my gear and a rifle to do this with... I been trying to hit one of our targets at 1200 yards with my 30-06 back when i was using 168G bullet but realized that my 30-06 didnt like them at that distance and moved to 180 grain and its been real happy when I get time Im gonna try again with my new load... When my laptop gets repaired Ill join Longrangehunters... so i can soak in knowledge. This has been quite the conversation I appreciate all your advice and Input...

the wind meter i use is only $35 from midway and as long as you keep it oiled up it will read down to 1/2 mph. are you up on the effects of a half value wind or full value as well as tail wind vs head wind? once you get all of the basics nailed down the wind is the single largest factor and is by far the hardest to get right.

do you have a smart phone? if you do then download "shooter" its only $9.99 and youhave to get it thru the amazon app store. if you can get it i can walk you thru how to use it and you will be impressed how much it will help with first round hits from odd distances once you get the program dialed in to your actual drop data.

so for an investment of $45 or the cost of a couple boxes of reloads i promise you can cut your misses in half.

depending on what bullet and charge your using in the 06 it can retain around 1300fps at that range so the bullet will still be stable so that will be a makeable shot. i just used the info from some hornady SST 180 factory loads and i'm showing 38.25 moa of correction for 5000ft altitude at 75 degrees and 40 moa at 40 degrees. i am also showing 0.9 MOA per 1 mph of wind for drift at that range so to hit a 1 moa target you will have to know the wind to within the 1/4 mph so if its gusting any at all that shot becomes very hard but not impossible.

good luck with the upcoming job hunt. by day i am a 27 year old jounreyman high voltage lineman on a distribution line construction crew and i also run my diesel shop with help from my wife. i graduated with an associates in applied science in 2005.

i enjoy intelligent conversation also

I used Horanady Ballistic Calculator and I got 27.5 MOA of drop at 1000 yards for 7600 feet with 52 degrees, zero wind. So when I get time Im gonna do that but first I need to play with my new Refield for the upcomming Tournament, need to get familiar with it I dont want to miss a coyote for that reason .. Im almost dead set on getting a 7mm Rem Mag.. Very intereasting cartridge as long as it shoots better than . 5 MOA at 100-200 yards.

Sadly No I do not have a smart phone I have a Casio Rock that has been serving me well for three years, when I realy get into the Long Range Game ill invest into a device such a an I pod touch. Im slightly familiar with half, full and 3/4 value winds I use a program called Sniper Trainer but it teaches you how to range with mildots and teaches you about head wind, tail wind and ect, I need to finsh understanding about windage though, the program nice but its not perfect either wish I had someone to talk to about it once i refresh up on it..

As for my schooling Im graduating with an Associates of Applied Science in Mechanincal Technology. Know the basics to machining, welding and have a Certificate in Heavy Equipment and diesel repair. When Im not doing any of those I am either reloading, shooting, hunting, or working on my truck (but thats rare!)

If i got anymore questions or if you want to talk guns just shoot me a PM.... Ill let you know when I join the Long Range hunting Forum. Now I need to go clean my rifles!!!

Have a good one.

We have the infamous "Camp Kiwanis Lane" and the residents and owners of the land do not allow hunting on this road. The deer seem to know it. If anyone comes are way in Grantville, Pa watch ur bumpers on that lane. Everynight the herds seem to get bigger and bigger, Its been that way since we were all kids.

Well I placed 8th our of 39 teams in our tornament, We only got two yotes the winning team got five. One guy had to bring his in a garbage bag since he blew him apart with a 7mm Mag. But I shot our two out at 480 yards and 350 yards, we had three jumping like fishes in a pond in the chicos but we couldent get a shot on them and we were wishing we had brought the 12 guage.
