how many of you guys make a living as a hotshot? I want to get into it but not sure of everything I need to get started, correct license and insurance, hitches, where to get loads . any tips would be helpful

 

Old post, but hey, others might have similar questions. I'll start with hitches; I've heard good things about B&W, helped a friend install one in his truck, seemed pretty good quality and he's been happy with it, plus they advertise on this site, so... Anyway when you figure out if you want a gooseneck ball, fifthwheel, etc., you can post in the quote section, see if the site sponsors can cut you a deal.
If you cross state lines you'll have to have a Motor Carrier ID number, either register yourself or lease onto a company, run their number and haul their loads
Cargo insurance can get complicated, make sure your insurance agent is familiar with trucking regs. Same with your lawyer.
We've all heard of U-ship.com or whatever by now, plenty of load boards on the internet, look em over,see if any look worth your time.
